Sweden has a large and diverse immigrant population; around 20% of Swedish residents were born outside the country. Major groups originate from a range of countries, including Syria, Iraq, Finland, Poland and Iran, and there are also sizeable refugee and diaspora communities, such as a long-established Kurdish population.
In January 2026, the Swedish government announced a proposal to expand voluntary repatriation schemes for immigrants. Under this proposal, adult immigrants who choose to return to their country of origin would be eligible to receive a one-time grant of approximately €33 000.
